By Morris Panych. Be careful what you wish for. A Milwaukee Premier! Kemp, a selfish and mercenary bank clerk, quits his job to keep a deathwatch on his rich aunt whom he hasn't seen in 30 years. He announces that since he's taken the trouble to answer her dying summons, he'd like her to get it over with and collect his inheritance. But Grace, the object of his disaffection, doesn't appear to be cooperating any time soon. This oddly matched pair become trapped in a macabre bond that's comic on the surface, and deeply human at its core.

"Gershwin & Friends" takes place at a ritzy party in the New York City home of George Gershwin in the midst of the Jazz Age. "I Got Rhythm," "Summertime" and "Rhapsody in Blue" can be heard wafting through the air. We join a young couple from Mr. Gershwin’s party staff, Cynthia and Parrish, as they celebrate Gershwin’s music behind the scenes. Free-wheeling and spontaneous, Parrish tries to loosen up the more grounded and down to earth Cynthia, with minimal success. After their work is done at the Gershwin estate they head home to Harlem to kick up their heels in their own high-style with the music of Gershwin’s “friends” Fats Waller, Duke Ellington and Harold Arlen. This dynamic and innovative Skylight revue will again feature Cynthia Cobb, Parrish Collier and Paul Helm. Last season, the critically acclaimed Gershwin & Friends had a sold out run in the Studio Theatre.

Wild Space Dance Company serves up a moveable feast of inventive dance and wry humor in Delicious, inspired by appetite, the culinary arts and the pursuit of satisfaction. “Creating a performance inspired by the art and act of cooking reflects my own love of the culinary experience,” says Artistic Director Debra Loewen. “Like preparing a meal, dance begins with directions, ingredients like dancers, props and costumes are added, then there is time to rehearse until a final performance is ready to be served. To invent movement for Delicious, we looked at the similarities of the cooking and choreographic process, and the desires that drive us to find a sense of fulfillment in food and life.” Flying dishes, favorite and feared recipes, onstage cooking and directions on good dinner manners fill the Delicious menu. Through interwoven vignettes of theatrical movement and full-bodied dance, performers reveal desires and disappointments in the pursuit of satisfaction. Delicious performances are at 8 p.m., February 9-11, 2012 at the Stiemke Theater. Admission prices are $25 for premium tickets, $20 for regular admission, $18 for students and seniors. Tickets are available by calling the Milwaukee Repertory Theater box office at 414/224-9490 beginning in January 2012.In conjunction with Delicious, Wild Space is partnering with Hunger Task Force to collect non-perishable food items at the performance and to donate a portion of the proceeds to the agency.

Reeling from the loss of her brother during recent Civil Rights actions, Ruth – a young African-American in late 1960s Milwaukee – is ready to quit school when she finds inspiration in the autobiography of Golda Meir, past student of the former Fourth Street School who rose to become the first woman prime minister of Israel. Woven into the portrayal of Ruth’s story is that of a young Golda Meir, and both stories converge when a grown Golda Meir arrives at her former Milwaukee school to give a speech. Audiences will witness both young people finding strength and courage across generations to break barriers and reach their own promised land. TO THE PROMISED LAND continues The Wisconsin Cycle, First Stage’s commitment over the next five seasons to develop and produce plays that celebrate the history and people of Wisconsin.
